January 2015 saw new regulations enter into UK law concerning the use of fluorinated gases in refrigeration, air conditioning and fire protection systems.

 What is Being Phased Out?

Hydrofluorinated gases (HFCs / F-Gas) are a huge contributor to pollution and the EU has an ambitious plan to replace this and other polluters by 2020. As this has to be done in stages, those with a GWP (Global Warming Potential) rating above 2500 will go first, this means that R404A will be replaced with lower rated F-Gases, such as R410A AND R134A. HFC 404A can be found in Refrigeration units and is also used in air conditioning units.

From 2020, you will not be able to use so-called “virgin” gases in any appliances.

What Checks Must Be Kept?

The importance of checks that measure emissions are now more important than ever as the EU seeks to limit greenhouse gas emission.
The responsibility to ensure that all thresholds are adhered to lie with the operator. For instance an office block owner is responsible for the air conditioning emissions and a restauraunt owner is responsible for refrigeration units. All owners must make sure that checks are carried out and that any leaks are recorded. If a contractor is hired to manage the equipment, the responsibility to check for leaks is shared.

What Climate Friendly Technology is Replacing It?

The move to reclaimed gases is only a stopgap measure and in the long term it is predicted that the following technologies will replace F-Gases entirely:

  • AGas

  • Hydrocarbons

  • Ammonia

  • Water

  • HFOs /HFC blends
